Brief History of Louis Cartier Watches
The whole World knows the name Cartier is associated with luxury, sophistication, elegance and style. The Cartier company was born in Paris in 1847 by the visionary man pictured above. His name was Louis-Francois Cartier. He quickly attained a worldwide reputation for his original designs of beautiful jewelry and fashion accessories. When he recieved a royal commission in 1904 it announced Cartier as the leading Jeweler to Europe’s Kings, Queens and heads of state. Shortly afterwards King Edward VII of Great Britain was said to have called Cartier’s grandson Louis Cartier “the Jeweler and watchmaker of royalty”.
By the begining of the 20th century Cartier had already expanded it’s collection and developed advanced Watch making techniques. This was a time when pocket watches were still considered an expensive luxury of upper class gentlemen, Cartier changed the staus quo by making the Wrist Watch popular and promoting it as a major fashion statement for both Men and Women. To own a Cartier Watch was a status symbol among europe’s affluent elite. In 1904 Cartier is credited with creating the worlds first Wrist Watch, it was named the Santos. This special edition Watch was commissioned for his friend and famous Brazillian Aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. As a pilot Dumont needed to keep an eye on the time without taking his hands off the controls off his aeroplane. The new Santos Watch was a huge success. Without hesitation, Cartier soon designed the full range of classic watches we are all familiar with today. These include Cartier’s signature timepiece “the Tank” available her also, which made it’s debut in 1917 during the first world war. The Tank Watch was inspired by the awesome sight of the new battlefield war machines brought to the fighting in europe by the American army.
Returning to the royalty theme and after many requests to perfect a watch with the feature, Cartier produced the first water-resistant Watch. This watch was named after the Pasha of Marrakesh. Cartier was asked if he could design a watch the Pasha could wear whilst swimming in his private pool. Although Cartier watches themselves are famous, in 1910 the company added another award winner to their inventory when they invented the very ingenious folding clasp strap. All watchmakers around the globe now use this feature as standard.
